  9. This ReadMe file contains late-breaking information and tips on using
  10. VideoLogic's SmartTools for Microsoft Windows 95. For a detailed explanation
  11. of the functions and operations of SmartTools please consult the on-line help.

  13. The SmartTools are a new set of applications designed to allow you to get the 
  14. most out of the powerful capabilities of your GrafixStar graphics card. The
  15. SmartTools give you more control over the appearance and behaviour of your 
  16. Windows desktop.

  26. 1. An overview of SmartTools
  27. ============================
  28. 1.1.  SmartTools
  29. ================
  30. SmartTools lets you create toolbars to give you more control and quicker 
  31. access to your Windows applications and documents.
  32.  
  33. With SmartTools you can:
  34.  
  35.     -    Use toolbars for other Smart applications, and customize these toolbars 
  36.         to suit your needs.
  37.  
  38.     -    Create toolbars for other applications, adding buttons for the 
  39.         programs, documents and files you use most.
  40.  
  41.     -    Assign hotkeys for the commands that you use most often.
  42.  
  43. 1.2.  SmartDisplay
  44. ==================
  45. SmartDisplay makes it easier and quicker for you to set up the display 
  46. properties for your monitor.
  47.  
  48. SmartDisplay gives you:
  49.  
  50.     -    A SmartDisplay Wizard, which guides you through a step by step 
  51.         procedure that helps you find the ideal display properties for the 
  52.         kind of work you are doing.
  53.  
  54.     -    A SmartDisplay setup procedure for advanced users, which allows you 
  55.         to select the display size, color palette, refresh rate, desktop size, 
  56.         connectivity, monitor alignment and properties for your display.
  57.  
  58. 1.3.  SmartDesktop
  59. ==================
  60. SmartDesktop is an application which controls the appearance and behaviour 
  61. of your desktop.
  62.  
  63. With SmartDesktop you can:
  64.  
  65.     -    Use a virtual desktop, where the desktop size is larger than the 
  66.         display size. SmartDesktop controls the way you move around the 
  67.         desktop and reach the off-screen portion of your desktop.
  68.  
  69.     -    Change the display size at the touch of a button, allowing you to zoom 
  70.         in and zoom out while you are working.
  71.

  73. 2. Installation / Deinstallation
  74. ================================
  75. The GrafixStar 400 software for Windows 95 users is supplied on the VideoLogic 
  76. Software Library CD in the folder GS400\Win95. This contains two sub-folders, 
  77. Disk1 and Disk2, which contain the following:
  78.  
  79.     Disk1 -  SmartTools and GrafixStar 400 Driver
  80.     Disk2 -  Disk 2 of the SmartTools installer
  81.  
  82. These folders can be copied to your hard disk, or to 3.5" disks, and intalled 
  83. in the same way as from the CD. If you are doing this, remember to use the
  84. path to the files you are using, not the path to the files on the CD shown
  85. below ([drive]:\GS400\Win95).
  86.  
  87. Before installing SmartTools, you must install the latest graphics drivers 
  88. for your GrafixStar card (found in [drive]:\GS400\Win95\Disk1 of the CD). 
  89. This is explained in detail below.

  91.  
  92. 2.1.  Installation
  93. ==================
  94.  
  95. 2.1.1.  Installing the GrafixStar 400 Drivers for the first time in Windows 95
  96. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  97.  
  98. 1.  Switch your computer on and start Windows 95.
  99. 2.  Windows 95 detects that you have a new graphics card and automatically 
  100.     installs the default driver for this card. When prompted, restart your PC.
  101. 3.  Insert the CD into your system.  
  102. 3.  Insert the CD into your system.
  103. 4.  Choose Browse and locate the folder [drive]:\GS400\Win95\Disk1 on the CD,
  104.     choose OK twice, select GrafixStar 400 PCI from the list and click OK.
  105. 5.  When the GrafixStar files have been copied to your PC, a message will appear 
  106.     asking you to restart Windows. Choose OK.
  107. 6.  Windows 95 will restart with the new drivers loaded. If these have been
  108.     installed correctly you will find a new 'Advanced' tab in the Display
  109.     Properties panel.
  110. 7.  Open the Display Properties control panel (the quickest way is to click the 
  111.     right mouse button on the Windows desktop and select Properties).
  112. 8.  Select the Settings tab and click on Change Display Type. 
  113. 9.  Make sure that the Monitor Type line contains the name of your monitor.
  114.     If not, choose Change Monitor Type, select your monitor from the list 
  115.     and click OK.
  116.  
  117. 2.1.2.  Re-installing the GrafixStar drivers
  118. --------------------------------------------
  119. The easiest way to install the GrafixStar Windows 95 software is using the 
  120. Display Properties window:
  121.  
  122.    1.    Insert the CD or disk into your computer.
  123.    2.    Open the Control Panel window. To do this, click Start, point to 
  124.         Settings and click Control Panel.
  125.    3.    Double click on the Display icon to open the Display Properties Window.
  126.     Note: You can go directly to the Display Properties window by clicking 
  127.         on the Windows 95 desktop with the right mouse button and choosing 
  128.         Properties from the menu.
  129.    4.    Choose the Settings page by clicking on the Settings tab. 
  130.    5.    Choose the Change Display Type button.
  131.    6.    Make sure that the Monitor Type line contains the name of your monitor. 
  132.         If not, click the Change button and select the name of your monitor 
  133.         from the list.
  134.    7.    Click on the Change button for the Adapter Type.
  135.    8.    Insert the GrafixStar CD into your computer and choose Have Disk from 
  136.         the Select Device menu. Browse to the folder 
  137.         [drive]:\GS400\win95\disk1.
  138.    9.    Select your GrafixStar card from the list and choose OK.
  139.   10.    When the GrafixStar files have been copied to your PC, the Change 
  140.         Display Type window is displayed again. Choose Close.
  141.   11.    A message appears telling you that you will have to restart Windows 95 
  142.         for the new display type to take effect. Choose OK.
  143.   12.    Windows 95 restarts with the new GrafixStar Windows 95 drivers. 
  144.  
  145. If the GrafixStar drivers have installed correctly you will find an 
  146. additional 'Advanced' page in the Display Properties Window.
  147.  
  148. You are now ready to install the SmartTools for Windows 95.

  151. 2.1.3.  Installing the SmartTools
  152. ---------------------------------
  153.    1.    Choose Run from the Start menu.
  154.    2.    Insert the GrafixStar CD into your computer and browse to the folder 
  155.         [drive]:\GS400\win95\disk1.
  156.    3.    Type setup and choose OK.
  157.    4.    Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  158.  
  159. When SmartTools is installed, the Advanced page within the Display 
  160. Properties Window is replaced by two new pages entitled 'SmartDisplay' 
  161. and 'SmartDesktop'.

  164. 2.2.  Deinstalling the SmartTools
  165. =================================
  166. To deinstall the SmartTools from your system, rerun the SmartTools SetUp 
  167. from the VideoLogic SmartTools program group and select Remove.
  168.  
  169. Note that removing SmartTools involves restarting Windows 95, so save 
  170. any open documents before you start.
  171.  
  172. Once the SmartTools have been deinstalled, you will have to reinstall the 
  173. GrafixStar drivers so the Advanced page reappears in the Display Properties 
  174. Window.
  175.  
  176. 3. Troubleshooting
  177. ==================
  178.  
  179. 3.1  Display Properties - Settings Tab Corruption
  180. -------------------------------------------------
  181. As part of the SmartTools installation the Settings Tab in the Display Properties
  182. page is modified. It has been found that some other applications may also modify
  183. the Settings Tab, e.g. Direct X version 2. This can result in corruption of the 
  184. Settings Tab.
  185.  
  186. To disable the SmartTools modifications to the Settings Tab use the patch file
  187. (msstnpg.reg) included on disk 2 of the SmartTools install. To do this run the
  188. file MSSTNGPG.REG once from within Windows 95 by double clicking on its
  189. icon. To re-enable the SmartTools modifications to the Settings Tab, SmartTools
  190. must first be deinstalled and then reinstalled.
  191.  
  192. 3.2  Errors when running Virtual Desktops and/or changing Modes
  193. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  194. Some applications, especially those that display video, report errors when running
  195. a Virtual Desktop or changing modes. Every effort is made to prevent such
  196. problems but if they do occur we recommend that you close the problematic 
  197. application before changing mode.

  199. 3.3.  Modes
  200. ===========
  201. 3.3.1.  16-color modes
  202. ----------------------
  203. SmartTools is not designed to work with a 16-color palette (4-bits per pixel). 
  204.  
  205. 3.3.2.  Monitors
  206. ----------------
  207. Windows 95 does not restrict the generic SVGA monitor settings to a given 
  208. set of display sizes, so SmartTools allows any display size to be selected. 
  209. Therefore if you have 'Standard monitor types' selected as you monitor, 
  210. SmartTools will not restrict your display size. There is therefore a 
  211. possibility that you could zoom out to a display size that your monitor does 
  212. not support.
  213.  
  214. 3.4.  Toolbars
  215. ==============
  216. 3.4.1.  Disappearing Toolbars
  217. -----------------------------
  218. When using SmartDesktop to zoom into the desktop, it is possible from time 
  219. to time to lose sight of the SmartTools toolbars. You can relocate a toolbar 
  220. within your current display using the 'Find Now' feature. To reach the 
  221. 'Find Now' button, select the Properties button of the toolbar on the 
  222. Toolbar Properties page of SmartTools.
  223.  
  224. 3.4.2.  Maximize in Display
  225. ---------------------------
  226. The SmartDesktop feature 'Maximize on Display' maximizes your applications 
  227. to the full size of your display. This feature ignores the Windows 95 
  228. Taskbar, so part of your application window disappears below it. If you use
  229. this feature, we recommended that you set the Taskbar to 'auto-hide'.
  230.  
  231. 3.4.3.  Moving & Deleting Buttons from Toolbars
  232. -----------------------------------------------
  233. You can move buttons around on the toolbars by holding down the shift key 
  234. and dragging them to the desired location. To remove a button, drag it off 
  235. the toolbar while holding down the shift key.
  236.  
  237. 3.5.  HotKeys
  238. =============
  239. 3.5.1.  DOSBox
  240. --------------
  241. The SmartDesktop hotkeys will not function when a DOSBox is open and its 
  242. window currently has the focus.
  243.  
  244. 3.6.  Connectivity - Feature Connector
  245. ======================================
  246. 3.6.1  Feature Connector
  247. ------------------------
  248. If you select 'Feature Connector' from the Connectivity page of SmartDisplay, 
  249. your CONFIG.SYS file is modified to include the TSR VLENABLE.SYS. VLENABLE 
  250. is a small utility that enables DAC snooping at start up. 
  251.  
  252. If your system does not have a CONFIG.SYS file, or it has one that is zero 
  253. bytes in size, you must create a file called CONFIG.SYS at the root of your 
  254. hard disk and make sure that it contains some data (a 'rem' line is 
  255. sufficient), before you select 'Feature Connector'. 
  256.  
  257. When you have selected Feature Connector you must restart your system to run 
  258. VLENABLE.
  259.  
  260. If you uncheck the Feature Connector option, the VLENABLE.SYS line in the 
  261. CONFIG.SYS file will be disabled by changing it to a 'rem' line.

  290. All other modes display AVI files using software only, which gives poorer 
  291. quality playback. If you want to playback MPEG files without special 
  292. hardware, you can obtain a FREE copy of Xing MPEG Player when you return 
  293. your GrafixStar 400 registration card.

  295. 4.2. Using games with DirectDraw
  296. ================================
  297. GrafixStar 400 display drivers for Windows 95 are compatible with 
  298. DirectDraw. 
  299.  
  300. SmartTools automatically installs DirectDraw. To manually install 
  301. DirectDraw, find the directory REDIST.IHV on disk 2 and run SETUP.EXE, 
  302. after which Windows 95 needs to be restarted. To deinstall DirectDraw 
  303. simply delete the following files:
  304.

  312. 4.3. Troubleshooting
  313. ====================
  314.  
  315. Upgrading the BIOS
  316. ------------------
  317.  
  318. Upgrading your GrafixStar 400 to use the latest BIOS can cure a number
  319. of problems.
  320.  
  321. The TSR 'vlgx4upg.com' updates the GrafixStar 400 BIOS to version 1.3. 
  322. ævlgx4upg.comÆ can be found in the VLPROD directory of a Windows 3.1/3.11 
  323. installation and in the SYSTEM directory of a Windows 95 installation.
  324.  
  325. The TSR remains installed until the system is switched off. We recommended 
  326. that you run it permanently, by adding a call to it in either your 
  327. CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT.
  328.  
  329. To run from the CONFIG.SYS insert the line
  330.  
  331.     Install=DRIVE:\PATH\VLGX4UPG.COM
  332.  
  333. To run the file from the AUTOEXEC.BAT insert the line
  334.  
  335.     DRIVE:\PATH\VLGX4UPG.COM
  336.  
  337. QuickTime for Windows Version 2.XX.XX
  338. -------------------------------------
  339. If you experience problems when viewing QuickTime movies, run the QuickTime
  340. Control Panel from the Windows 95 Control Panel, and follow the steps below:
  341.  
  342. - Run the QuickTime Control Panel, click the more button and select the 
  343.   Video tab. 
  344.  
  345. - From within the Optimization section, the Draw Method setting will 
  346.   be set to Video Hardware. Change this to Video Driver.
  347.  
  348. - close the QuickTime Control Panel.
  349.  
  350. Play AVI with MS PLUS! pack
  351. ---------------------------
  352. If you are using a display mode which is capable of video acceleration 
  353. (see section 4.1) and have the option 'Show Window contents while dragging' 
  354. enabled, you will see the accelerated video displaced from the video window 
  355. whilst dragging the video window around the desktop.  Disable the 
  356. 'Show Window contents while dragging' on the PLUS page in the display 
  357. properties.
  358.  
  359. Monitor screen centering
  360. ------------------------
  361. Some advanced monitors which utilize a user display setting by detecting the 
  362. horizontal line frequency, may appear to change the size and positioning of the 
  363. returned Window 95 screen when task switching from a DOS fullscreen session to a 
  364. Windows 95 session.  This problem occurs when the monitor is at the borderline 
  365. between two settings. To remedy, use the monitor screen controls to adjust the 
  366. screen to the desired settings.
  367.  
  368. Quickres
  369. --------
  370. Quickres is part of a series of unsupported utilities provided by Microsoft.  
  371. The mechanism used by Quickres to achieve color-depth switching on the fly can 
  372. seriously impact GrafixStar 700 performance, and can make Windows 95 unstable.  
  373. We do not recommend the use of this utility.
  374.  
  375. Xing 2.X
  376. ---------
  377. PEG clips replayed in modes other than the video accelerated modes listed 
  378. in section 4.1. above, may cause Windows to become unstable. If this problem 
  379. occurs, change the Display Mode to one that supports video acceleration.
